Biography

Lydia Khalil is a non-resident fellow at the Lowy Institute's West Asia Program. She is also a visiting fellow and lecturer at Macquarie University's Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counterterrorism. Formerly she served as a political advisor to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq where she worked closely with Iraqi politicians on political negotiations and constitutional drafting. Before her arrival in Australia, Lydia was a counterterrorism advisor to the New York Police Department. She has published extensively on issues relating to Middle East politics, terrorism and counterterrorism and is working on a forthcoming book on Iraq. She was born in Cairo, Egypt and is a native Arabic speaker.
