Katharine Jefferts Schori is the first woman to hold the top post in the church's nearly 400-year history. She previously served as the ninth Bishop of Nevada, and before her ordination was an oceanographer with the National Marine Fisheries Service in Seattle. She is also a pilot with more than 500 flight-hours logged.
