David N. Cicilline has been the Mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, since 2002. Under his leadership as Mayor, Providence saw a double-digit drop in the rate of violent crime for two consecutive years and currently is experiencing the lowest crime rate in three decades; urban revitalization has attracted more than $3 billion of new development in city neighborhoods; city government has been transformed through a series of government downsizes and new union contracts; and Providence Public Schools are showing steady improvement across the board. Previous to his work as Mayor, he served four terms as a state representative and earned a reputation as a fierce champion of political reform and gun safety.
