Biography

Professor James Manor is currently at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex in Brighton and holds the VKRV Rao Endowment Professorship at the Institute for Social and Economic Change in Bangalore, India. A graduate of Yale University who took his DPhil at the University of Sussex, he has published widely in the fields of political science and state-society relations in developing countries, particularly India and South Asia, and has also done field research in every region of sub-Saharan Africa. He has enjoyed a close relationship with the Institute of Commonwealth Studies; he was a Junior Research Fellow at the start of his career and later was Director and Professor of Commonwealth Studies.
