Biography

Elaine Scarry is a professor of English and American Literature and Language, and the Walter M. Cabot Professor of Aesthetics and the General Theory of Value at Harvard University. Her interests include Theory of Representation, the Language of Physical Pain and Structure of Verbal and Material Making in Art, Science and the Law. Professor Scarry's writings include The Body in Pain; Dreaming by the Book; On Beauty; and Being Just and articles on war and social contract. In addition to teaching English, she has lectured in law and medicine, and gave the Tanner Lectures on Human Values at Yale University. A Guggenheim Fellow, she has been a Fellow at the Getty Research Institute and at the Institute of Advanced Study in Berlin and in Palo Alto.
