Chronicle staff writer John Koopman has reported extensively from Iraq, beginning in March 2003, when he accompanied 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, across the border into Iraq and reported on battles in Basra, Diwaniyah, Kut and on the taking of Baghdad. A former Marine, Koopman wrote about his experiences covering the invasion of Iraq in a book, McCoy's Marines: Darkside to Baghdad.
