About this series

President Obama has endorsed same-sex marriage, yet at the same time, North Carolina changed its constitution to ban all unions except between a man and a woman. The issue is a contentious one. On one side, those in favor of gay marriage point to the fundamental nature of equal rights and constitutional protections. On the other side, religion, tradition and ethics are the cornerstones of the opposition. With state law becoming a confusing and contradictory mess, the issue has now made its way to the Supreme Court of the United States.
