For many it's hard to believe that the first Earth Day did not occur until 1970, when overpopulation was seen as a more pressing concern than global warming.

Twenty-nine years later, awareness about the health of our planet has exploded. What was once seen as the domain of tree huggers is now a dominant political, economic, and security issue.
