Sixth and I Historic Synagogue

About Sixth and I Historic Synagogue

Sixth & I is a non-denominational, non-membership, non-traditional synagogue that hosts dynamic programming and thoughtful discussions that speak to hot topics and probing issues. Sixth & I's cutting-edge approaches to programming include intimate, face-to-face opportunities to interact with Supreme Court Justices, Pulitzer Prize winning authors, international rock bands, presidential candidates and others making significant contributions at the forefront of the cultural scene. At Sixth & I, you meet the person behind the persona. As the place to be for innovative and re-imagined Jewish experiences, Sixth & I strives to be a welcoming gateway to Jewish life in downtown Washington, DC. Sixth & I has received significant recognition for its commitment to innovation, including a national Slingshot Award, an honor which recognizes the 50 most creative and effective Jewish organizations around the country. Home to a synagogue in 1908 and then an African Methodist Episcopal Church for the latter part of the 20th century, Sixth & I was saved from becoming a nightclub and, instead, transformed into a hub for Jewish life in downtown DC. Sixth & I opened its doors in 2004 as a multi-generational community resource, with an eye for filling an unmet need for young and unaffiliated Jews seeking to explore their contemporary Jewish identity through entertainment, worship, and social activities.
