Public debt and climate change are the two biggest challenges of our time. Speaking at the third lecture of the Global Public Leaders Series, Nemat Shafik says that governments are often reluctant to act on these issues because this depends on sacrificing politically appealing policies and convincing the public to make short-term sacrifices for long-term gain. However, she warns that if energy subsidies are not cut, they will "crowd out" other, more worthwhile spending on education and infrastructure. By "doing the serious homework" of getting public support for cutting energy subsidies, Shafik says governments worldwide could avoid saddling future generations with huge debts.
