About this conference

This daylong program, organized by the Stanley Foundation in partnership with the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the MacArthur Foundation, convened in New York on Wednesday, January 18, 2012. The conference brought together figures critical to the historical and contemporary evolution of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P), including United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; members of the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty; key international, regional, and national officials; academic and policy experts; civil society figures; and journalists. The event traced the course of R2P through past experience and contemporary realities, and considered the prospects and challenges steering its evolution from political principle to policy doctrine into the next decade.
