FORA.tv, the leading online destination for video programs from the world’s best conferences and events, will broadcast the latest Intelligence Squared U.S. (IQ2US) debate, "When It Comes To Politics, The Internet Is Closing Our Minds.” It’s been argued that the rise of “personalization,” the use of algorithms to filter what you see online, and easy access to the like-minded, have served to reinforce our pre-conceptions. Is the information bubble a myth, or is it undermining civic discourse? Is the rise of social media really broadening our world views, or narrowing them?
The debate will be streamed live next Tuesday, April 17th at 6:45 pm EST at http://fora.tv/live/intelligencesquared_us/internet. Following the live event, FORA.tv will offer the debate as a free on-demand program, and the full video and highlights will be available to share and embed.
In support of the motion are Eli Pariser, author of The Filter Bubble and former MoveOn.org Board President, and Siva Vaidhyanathan, Chair of the Department of Media Studies at University of Virginia and author of The Googlization of Everything. Arguing against the motion are Evgeny Morozov, Internet Scholar and author of The Net Delusion, and Jacob Weisberg, Chairman and Editor in Chief of The Slate Group.
The moderator will be John Donvan, correspondent for ABC News’ “Nightline.” In a career that spans more than two decades for ABC News, Donvan previously served as the Chief White House Correspondent, along with postings in Moscow, London, Jerusalem and Amman.
