Cybersecurity experts discuss how innovation can help stop the threat of cyberattacks.
If more resources were devoted to the cutting-edge of cyber security innovation, countless cyber-attacks could be disrupted or prevented, caches of sensitive information could be kept out of the wrong hands, and millions of dollars could be saved. In 2011, the White House Cyber Coordinator launched the National Cybersecurity Innovation Awards, aimed at recognizing organizations and individuals who have found innovative methods and products to reduce the risk of cyber-attacks. Pulling together some of individuals who are aware of the newest and most promising technologies might spur greater awareness of this vital area of technological innovation.

Dr. Catherine Lotrionte
Catherine Lotrionte is the executive director of the Institute for Law, Science, and Global Security and a visiting assistant professor of government at Georgetown University. Dr. Lotrionte teaches courses on national security law, U.S. intelligence law, and international law. In addition to teaching, she is also the director of the Cybersecurity Project in partnership with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Dr. Lotrionte focuses on the role of international and domestic law in recent and upcoming developments in cyber technology and cyber threats.
In 2002, Dr. Lotrionte was appointed by General Brent Scowcroft to be counsel to the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board at the White House, a position she held until 2006. In 2002, she served as a legal counsel for the Joint Inquiry Committee of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Prior to that, Dr. Lotrionte was assistant general counsel with the Office of General Counsel at the Central Intelligence Agency, where she provided legal advice relating to foreign intelligence and counterintelligence activities, international terrorism, narcotics trafficking, organized crime, money laundering, espionage, and security matters. She has also served in the U.S. Department of Justice.
She earned her B.A. in Political Science and Economics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, her law degree from New York University, and her Ph.D. in international relations from Georgetown University. Dr. Lotrionte is the author of numerous publications, including a forthcoming book concerning U.S. national security law in the post-Cold War era. She is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Paul Nguyen
Paul Nguyen serves as the Vice President of Cyber Solutions for Knowledge Consulting Group (KCG), where he advises federal Chief Information Officers (CIO) and Chief Information Security Officers (CISO) on various cybersecurity issues. He is responsible for the delivery of cybersecurity and advisory services to customers in the federal civilian market and commercial sector.
Mr. Nguyen brings over 12 years of experience as a seasoned cybersecurity practitioner for the federal government and commercial sector, including several Fortune 100 companies.
Prior to KCG, Mr. Nguyen served as Director of Federal Solutions for Neohapsis, where he led the development of their federal practice. His responsibilities included the development of a go-to-market strategy for cybersecurity services to the federal government and overseeing the delivery of client engagements. Before Neohapsis, he served as the federal CISO at the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency, where he was the recipient of the first Federal Computer Week Rising Star Award for his program. He was also previously a Manager for Deloitte & Touche's Security and Privacy Services practice overseeing all Department of Justice cybersecurity and privacy contracts, which included serving as an advisor to the CIO and CISO. He also brings a pedigree as an attack/exploitation practitioner with renowned firms such as @stake, Symantec, and Neohapsis.
Mr. Nguyen received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Finance and a Master of Science in Information Technology Management from Carnegie Mellon University. He also holds certifications for Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and Certified in Government and Enterprise IT (CGEIT).
