Bio

Dr. Adekeye Adebajo

Dr. Adekeye Adebajo has been Executive Director of the Centre for Conflict Resolution (CCR), in Cape Town, South Africa, since 2003. He previously served as Director of the Africa Programme of the New York-based International Peace Institute (IPI), when he was also an adjunct professor at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). He served on United Nations missions in South Africa, Western Sahara, and Iraq. Dr. Adebajo is the author of Building Peace in West Africa, Liberia's Civil War, The Curse of Berlin: Africa After the Cold War, and UN Peacekeeping in Africa: From the Suez Crisis to the Sudan Conflicts, as well as the editor of From Global Apartheid to Global Village: Africa and the United Nations. He obtained his doctorate from Oxford University in England, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar.

Jean-Marie Guehenno

Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed Jean-Marie Guehenno Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations on the October 1st, 2000. Mr. Guehenno came to the post with a wide experience in the field of diplomacy, defense and international relations, as well as in administration and management. Mr. Guehenno was a member of the Commission that produced the White Paper on Defense (1994). He was appointed Chairman of the Institut des hautes etudes de defense nationale in 1998. He has also been a member of the UN Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters since 1999. Mr. Guehenno was educated at the Ecole nationale d'administration in Paris . He became a member of the Court des comptes (the French Audit Office) after his graduation from ENA in 1976. He was attached to the section of the Court that audits the Ministry of Defense until his appointment as the Under-Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations.

Ivan Šimonović

Šimonović assumed his functions as Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights on July 17, 2010, heading the New York Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.Â From 2008 to 2010, he was Minister of Justice of Croatia. Previously Mr. Šimonović was Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, where he served as Senior Vice President and President of the Economic and Social Council from 2001 to 2003.

A Croatian national, Mr. Šimonović worked as a professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Zagreb, where he served as Head of the Legal Theory Department, Vice-Dean and Vice-Rector for international cooperation.

Mr. Šimonović has a graduate degree in law, a master's degree in public administration and politics, and a Ph.D. from the University of Zagreb and was a visiting scholar at the Universities of Graz and Yale.

Amb Bruno Stagno Ugarte

Ambassador Bruno Stagno Ugarte became the Executive Director of the Security Council Report in mid-2011 after 16 years in the Foreign Service of Costa Rica, including a four-year term as Foreign Minister (2006â€“2010). Previously, he served as Permanent Representative to the United Nations (2002â€“2006), Chief of Staff of the Foreign Ministry (1998â€“2000), and Minister Counselor and Consul General at the Embassy in Paris (1994â€“1998). Ambassador Stagno also served as President of the Assembly of States Parties of the International Criminal Court (2005â€“2008), Co-President of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Conferences (2007â€“2009), Co-President of the UN 2005 Summit Outcome Document (2005) and Vice President of the UN Commission of Sustainable Development (2002â€“2004). He is a graduate of Georgetown University (BSFS 1991), UniversitÃ© de la Sorbonne (UPIII-IHEAL, DEA 1994), and Princeton University (MPP 2001).

Guehenno believes that "genocide has enormous baggage", and calling the Darfur crisis a genocide has harmed possible international peace negotiations with Sudan.
