Some Facts about former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Alan Greenspan
- During his time as Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Greenspan achieved an almost rock star like status, but soon after his retirement, he was criticized for his possible role in the financial crisis, and has been accused of mismanaging the US economy.
- He retired from the Federal Reserve in 2006, and immediately formed an economic consulting firm Greenspan Associates LLC.
- Even after his retirement, he has found that his public comments still have an impact, and has said that it is still his responsibility to comment on monetary policy and “global things.”
- In 2007, his memoir The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World was published. A review in The New York Times called it the “most unexpectedly charming Washington insider memoir since Katharine Graham’s a decade ago.”
- According to Time magazine’s list of 25 People to Blame for the Financial Crisis, Greenspan’s extremely low interest rates of the early 2000s, and his “long-standing disdain for regulation are now held up as the leading causes of the mortgage crisis.” He has admitted that he “‘made a mistake in presuming’ that financial firms could regulate themselves.”
