Helen Joyce
Helen Joyce moved to São Paulo in 2010 to become The Economist’s Brazil Bureau Chief. Previously she was education correspondent for the paper, based in London.
Before joining The Economist she edited Plus, an online magazine about mathematics published by the University of Cambridge, and was founding editor for the Royal Statistical Society's quarterly magazine, Significance. She has a BA in mathematics from Trinity College Dublin and a PhD in geometric measure theory from University College London.
Paulo Rezende
Paulo de Rezende is Head of Private Equity at Valora Investment Management, where he is currently raising a private equity fund targeted at the supply chain of the fast growing Brazilian Oil & Gas industry.
Previously, at Kinea Investimentos/Itau Unibanco (the leading Brazilian financial institution), he was responsible for structuring the Private Equity practice and setting up Kinea's first Private Equity fund.
Prior to joining Kinea Investimentos, he was a partner at Zone Ventures/Draper Fisher Jurvetson (Los Angeles, CA), and led investments in early stage technology companies. At Zone Ventures, among other, he was a founding investor of Lumexis, a board observer at DivX Networks, Inc. from inception through IPO, and managed the firm investments in Neven Vision (acquired by Google).
Mr. de Rezende was also a consultant with Booz & Co. Sao Paulo office, where he advised large consumer goods corporations on operations management; he also has experience in software development and product marketing at software and the semiconductor industries. His experience was acquired while he was working in the United States, Europe, and Brazil.
Mr. de Rezende holds a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil and an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he currently serves on its Latin American Executive Board.
Peter Schwartz
Peter Schwartz is co-founder and chairman of Global Business Network (GBN), a unique membership organization and worldwide network of strategists, business executives, scientists, and artists based in Emeryville, California.
Established in 1988, GBN specializes in corporate scenario planning and research on the future of the business environment. From 1982 to 1986, Schwartz headed scenario planning for the Royal Dutch/ Shell Group of Companies in London. His team conducted comprehensive analyses of the global business and political environment and worked with senior management to create successful strategies.
Before joining Royal Dutch/ Shell, Schwartz directed the Strategic Environment Center at SRI International. The Center researched the business milieu, lifestyles, and consumer values, and conducted scenario planning for corporate and government clients.
Schwartz is the co-author of both The Long Boom, and When Good Companies Do Bad Things: Responsibility and Risk in an Age of Globalization. Schwartz is also the author of The Art of the Long View: Planning for the Future in an Uncertain World. This seminal publication on scenario planning has been translated into Dutch, Portuguese, and Chinese.
Schwartz also co-authored Seven Tomorrows: Toward a Voluntary History with James Ogilvy and Paul Hawken in 1982, and The Emergent Paradigm: Changing Patterns of Thought and Belie with James Ogilvy in 1979. He has published and lectured widely and served as a script consultant on the films War Games and Sneakers. Schwartz received a BS in aeronautical engineering and astronautics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
