With the media firestorm created by the content of WikiLeaks' release of US diplomatic cables, a corresponding debate over the future of diplomacy and the prevention of other leaks has also taken place. While many commentators agree that the cables have portrayed the US foreign service in a positive light, others argue that the potential for future leaks will make diplomacy more secretive, and ultimately less effective.

Mark McArdle, CEO of tinyHippos, and CIGI Distinguished Fellow Paul Heinbecker discuss the differences between Wikileaks' Julian Assange and famed whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg. McArdle and Heinbecker agree that unlike the Pentagon Papers, the WikiLeaks cables represent an "indiscriminate" leaking of information. "Ellsberg went out on a limb, because he saw something that fundamentally bothered him," says McArdle.
Secret documents detailing the U.S. role in Indochina from World War II to 1968. The U.S. Defense Department commissioned the study; a project associate, Daniel Ellsberg, who was opposed to U.S. participation in the Vietnam War, leaked details of the documents to the press. In June 1971 The New York Times began publishing articles based on the study. The U.S. Justice Department, citing national security, obtained a temporary court order halting publication. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the government had failed to justify restraint of publication, and the documents were published widely, fueling debate over the country's Vietnam policy.

I did not like this talk at all. Julian Assange and Wikileaks have transformed journalism for the better. They are exposing abuses that are committed by governments and corporations. Governments and corporations do not have a right to abuse their power and hide these abuses under the cloak of national security. If they commit abuses, they need to understand that there will be consequences. The world is watching!! These guys on the panel are haters of democracy, they support these nepharious activities that governament and corporations get away with due to lack of transparency. and commit these crimes in our name. Wikileaks is as good as the leaks. They are the publisher of last resort. The leaks are coming from good, patriotic Americans who are terriblly concerned with the dirction this country is going, and they are trying to do something about it. This panel is defending the indefensible. The military was trading "dancing boys" to Afghan criminals for cooperation, Pfiser was using poor sick African childern to do medical research on. These are the kinds of abuses that Wikileaks and the heroic Julian Assange are exposing. They need to be supported and defended. This panel is a disgraceful bunch of old, worn-out fools. "TRUTH WILL OUT!"
Also, why is it relevant if Ellsburg and Assange are alike or different? More relevant might be what the times are like now regarding freedom of speech, government secrecy, torture etc now versus the early 70's.
It should be noted that Ellsburg was on a public speaking tour last year to support Wikileaks and defend his friend, Assange. You can find video's of that here on Fora.
Wikileaks is the one drop of hope in a corporately controlled, government influenced media to get the truth out when it matters. Not every leak may be as significant, eg the recent 'cables' were fairly harmless and just pointed out what most people already knew except fully documented. Yet the US government and any threatened corporations desperately wants to take the hardest line possible against Assange. Why don't we talk about why corporations and governments being afraid of Wikileaks could be beneficial to US and Canadian citizens and global human rights.
Bradley Manning is a political prisoner but you wont read that in any mainstream news in North America. If you watched the 'Collateral Murder' video of the helicopter gunship mowing down innocent people including Reuters reporters, a man trying to help them and his children with 50 caliber anti-tank bullets how could you in good conscience ignore it. People deserve to know about the dark-side of war.
If Manning did leak the documents and video to Wikileaks, they had the obligation to redact and publish that information in co-operation with many respected news organizations. If they didn't publish it, their sources are putting themselves at risk for no reason.
Maybe it takes someone with a big ego that likes attention and cameras to have the balls to run a media outlet like Wikileaks. Who cares about Assanges personal affairs, they don't deserve any attention but that's what people love hearing about and the media encourages it.
Maybe we should ask why the governments and corporations are so afraid of Wikileaks instead of worrying so much about any possible negative outcome of leaking documents. Even if Wikileaks releases documents showing that Bank of America is scamming their customers and involved in illegal activities... how is that different than all the revelations of the cause of the recession. The only banker in jail since 2007 is Madoff and that's just because he ripped off rich and powerful people.
