As natural resources diminish, water and energy are pitted against each other as never before: in the gas shale, in agriculture for biofuels, in power plants, in the pumping stations and desalination facilities. Amanda Brock, Chief Executive Officer, has spent her career building and managing businesses. Her diverse personal, professional, and educational experiences add an important global business understanding and management approach to the WATER STANDARD team.
Originally from Mbabane, Swaziland, Ms. Brock was raised in Zimbabwe and South Africa. She attended the University of Natal in South Africa as a pre-law student, graduating in 1980 and then moving to Baton Rouge to attend law school at Louisiana State University. Today, she is licensed to practice in Louisiana and Texas.
Ms. Brock joined WATER STANDARD in November 2006 to develop and execute a comprehensive global business plan. As CEO, she has spent the past year meeting worldwide with financial and water treatment industry experts; attending, speaking, and presenting at conferences throughout the globe; and raising significant capital that further supports the viability of WATER STANDARD and its processes.
David E. Flitman has been Nalco's Senior Executive Vice President and President, Water and Process Services since February 2010. Before that he was Executive Vice President and President, Water and Process Services beginning in January 2009. He was Executive Vice President and President, Industrial and Institutional Services since joining Nalco in August 2008 until January 2009. Prior to joining Nalco, Mr. Flitman was President of Allegheny Power, the energy delivery arm of Allegheny Energy Inc. He had joined Allegheny in 2005 as Vice President of Distribution. Before that he gained broad cross-functional and global experience in a variety of leadership positions during a nearly 20-year career at DuPont, where he had most recently served as Global Business Director for the Nonwovens Business Group.
Mr. Gordon serves as President and Chief Operating Officer of Heckmann Corp. As President and Chief Operating Officer Mr. Gordon is responsible for the operations of the company and carrying out our growth and acquisition strategy. Mr. Gordon has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Siemens Water Technologies, a global business unit of Siemens AG. Siemens Water Technologies is a world leader in products, systems and services for water and wastewater treatment for industrial, institutional and municipal customers. Previously, Mr. Gordon served as Executive Vice President of the Siemens Water & Wastewater Systems Group from 2005 to 2007 and as Executive Vice President of the USFilter Water & Wastewater Services and Products Group from 1999 to 2005. Siemens acquired the USFilter Water and Wastewater business from Veolia in 2004. Prior to 1999, Mr. Gordon's experience included various executive positions with USFilter Corporation during the company's high growth years. Mr. Gordon received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Dakota and his MBA from the Babcock School of Wake Forest University.
Samantha Gross, IHS CERA Director, specializes in helping energy companies navigate the complex intersection of policy, environment, and technology. She is the manager of IHS CER's Global Energy service. She led the environmental and social aspects of IHS CERA's recent Multiclient Study Growth in the Canadian Oil Sands: Finding the New Balance, including consideration of water use and quality, local community impacts, and aboriginal issues. Ms. Gross was also the IHS CERA project manager for Towards a More Energy Efficient World and Thirsty Energy: Water and Energy in the 21st Century, both produced in conjunction with the World Economic Forum. Additional contributions to IHS CERA research include reports on the water impacts of unconventional gas production, international climate change negotiations, US vehicle fuel efficiency regulations, and the California low-carbon fuel standard. Before joining IHS CERA she was a Senior Analyst with the Government Accountability Office. Her professional experience also includes providing engineering solutions to the environmental challenges faced by petroleum refineries and other clients. Ms. Gross holds a BS from the University of Illinois, an MS from Stanford University, and an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley.

Venkee Sharma is CEO of Aquatech, a global leader in water purification technology for industrial and infrastructure markets with a focus on desalination, water reuse, and zero liquid discharge.

The oil obtained from oil shale cannot be refined by the methods that have been developed for crude oil, however, because shale oil is low in hydrogen and contains large amounts of nitrogen and sulfur compounds.
