The issue is far more serious and deep on almost every level than people on all sides understand, in my opinion. It too often devolves into ad hominem nonsense, impugning the motives of the defenders of each side.

If this is the case that two men or two women can marry then are you also open to the legal proposition that a women should be able to marry two women at the same time or marry one man and one woman? Can a man have four wives in the USA? Why not? One could argue it is a choice or it is nature! It may be better for family life and the economy! With sex selection of the children it would not have to mean an inbalance of the sexes?

Vegans have a fundamental right to exist and practice free eating habits. But we don't see a court involve itself in the decision as to whether a Vegan has a fundamental right to decide what to eat. Marriage is actually no greater a fundamental right than is being a Vegan. The thing is, the courts see an economic opportunity in intellectual debates over this thing called marriage. If the Supreme Court does it's avowed job, Marriage is not something that the court should even consider. Let religions police their membership. It should be of no more concern to the courts than is the practice of stoning a woman, or shunning a sinner. It is not the business of the court to be in this debate. Unless there is a new type of "Sharia Law" imposed by Christians, Muslims, Jews and Roman Catholics. Wake up America, the world is watching.

Why is Marriage necessary anyway? The answer revolves around religious beliefs and legal rights to wealth/benefits. If Marriage is unnecessary, granted that any religion has a protected right to admonish it's members, (one way or another), and the Constitution of the United States of America has an equal right, and OBLIGATION to keep any and all religions from imposing their religious beliefs on the citizens of this United States of America. Marriage then is only important because it provides economic benefits to the partners, (blessed and disavowed) and to the LAWYERS/POLITICIANS, who voted and/or lobbied themselves into this debate, hundreds of years ago.

it seems that if we separate the legal issue of equal rights from the religious issues of "marriage" this problem is easily resolved. we have laws that prevent unequal treatment of individuals that need to be upheld and thus permit the joining of two people in a long term union of their choosing with all of the rights and privileges permited by law. Churches are also protected and could offer the sactification according to their beliefs as a separate adjuct to the legal sactification of such unions. the two issues, religious marriage and legal union, are separate and need to be kept that way.

This is one of the best feel-good videos I have seen in a long time. It fills me with joy and renews my hope in this country. It should be illegal to allow a vote on whether or not to discriminate against a minority. Equality-Equality-Equality. You would think that this would be a very simple and obvious decision for most Americans. Sadly it is not.
