@ Periergeia:
so what is your point here?
is this technology not worth speding in it, because it is not a short term solution? 40 years of development are trully not a short term.

Or dou you have a problem with NIST because it was not meant to research in this field? So what if they didn't!

If you really are in "big physics" as you say, you may know that scientist have to "sell" their research in order to get money to keep researching and that Moses is talking about a theoretical model of development here. So surelly do you in your own job. If you have ever give a talk about your own research or work, then you know, that you want the people to understand what you are trying to achieve rather than what your problems are; and by the way, Moses talked about problems in developing this energy source.

As the USA flight to the moon, it was a hughe issue. nobody thought it was possible and of course it was not something that could be done in 1 year. It was a vissionary process that gave birth to many other developments that inlfuences our modern society, as "project management" to mention one.

I don't really you have a point in this discussion because you are talking the whole time about what should someone do and what someone shouldn't.
You don't even have a point in the matter of spending tax money! And I'll tell you why: because I prefer that my taxes are spend in fields of research like this rather than in warfare. You sure know, the american government has one of the biggest debts of its history due to the unreasonable expenses for warfare in the last years.

I think it is worth to spend money in developing this power source. This may not be the only one power source that we will use in the future but if it works, it would really change our lives.
I am glad that there still are people that are visionares in this world and don't get wasted with the limits that politics and economy set in your brain.

For all of those expecting fusion to be a magic solution to the problems of peak oil, environmental destruction and over population ,dream on;20 or 30 years from now is too late ;Techno optimism is a deluded and dangerous religion which has lead us to the precipe of destruction already

Charlie O:

Please read what I wrote about the technical aspects of fusion and please reply to them with a knowledgeable response.

My issue with this whole thing is NOT that fusion is not possible. I know that it is and how it works. I even worked on a project related to a fusion experiment for a little while myself. It was fun and I truly believe that that work was valuable.

The issue here is simply that THIS TALK over-promises and NIST under-delivers. Scientists are not supposed to over-promise and government programs that spend billions of YOUR tax dollars should deliver commensurate to what has been promised.

This is an extremely harsh violation of both of these well accepted rules. I can see it and... in all honesty, you either can't or you close your eyes to dream of endless cheap energy.

Fusion is simply possible, expensive and far out. The honest people in the fusion community will tell you this themselves... ask them! Or simply read their papers. Fusion is not a short term solution and it's not a solve-it-all. And, NIST is, most likely, not even the way to get to a technically manageable system that can deliver net energy at some reasonable price point. More importantly, NIST wasn't primarily built to be any of that. It was build for stockpile management... to test small amounts of material used in nuclear weapons for its performance in a nuclear explosion. NIST would have never gotten funding if it hadn't been for that purposes. Just look at the state of the remaining fusion research in the US and at the foot dragging for US participation in ITER! It's a crying shame how much we DON'T spend on fusion research!

NIST does a lot of things, some of which are even unique and valuable. But to promise fusion energy is not one of them.

I would wish your "discussion" with me would actually address all of these points instead of accusing me to be against new technology. I am not... I make my money with new technology and I have been part of large scale physics projects which beat NIST in complexity by orders of magnitude for many years. In other words... I know what I am talking about when it comes to "big physics" at the technological frontier. Do you? If you do, you might want to engage on that level. Please let the discussion begin. Your move.

The comment by "Periergeia" is a prime example of the "man-will-never-fly" school of reasoning: because something hasn't been done yet, it can't be done. Those with more open minds, and an interest in a scientifically credible assessment, might wish to await the results of a pending National Research Council study of the prospects for inertial confinement fusion energy systems before concluding that fusion energy research is "nonsense." That study should begin soon, with an interim report due in about one year.

Same nonsense as in this talk:

http://fora.tv/2010/05/22/Dr_Edward_..._in_Our_Future

See the discussion there... no need to repeat it one more time... the physics problem hasn't changed over the past month or so, neither has the fact that Dr. Moses keeps painting pink elephants with a couple billion shiny US dollars in funding that lead to exactly nowhere... for energy research. Just as last month, there will be some esoteric results coming out of this facility that can not be gained any other way and I am all for those. There are very good reasons to build facilities like this and more of them... for basic physics research. But for cheap energy... nope.
