The Hon. Jerzy Buzek
Professor Jerzy Buzek (born July 3, 1940) is a Polish engineer, academic lecturer and politician. He was the Prime Minister of Poland from 1997 to 2001 and has been a member of the European Parliament since June 13, 2004. On July 14, 2009, he was elected a new President of the European Parliament, succeeding Hans-Gert Pottering at the post.
Robert Casey Jr.
Robert Casey is a Democratic senator from the state of Pennsylvania. He was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006. A graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, Sen. Casey spent the following year teaching fifth grade and coaching eighth grade basketball in inner city Philadelphia for the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. In 1996, he was elected state auditor general for Pennsylvania, a position he held for two terms. In 2004, Sen. Casey took over as state treasurer, a position he held until he ran for the U.S. Senate in 2006. He currently serves on the Committee on Foreign Relations, where he is chariman of the Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs; the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, where he is chair of the Subcommittee on Production, Income Protection and Price support; the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions; the Special Committee on Aging; and the Joint Economic Committee.
George Voinovich
George Voinovich is a Republican senator from the state of Ohio. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998. He holds a degree in government from the University of Ohio along with a law degree from Ohio State University. His public service career began in 1967 as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. Sen. Voinovich served as mayor of Cleveland, lieutenant governor of Ohio, and governor of Ohio for two terms before his election to the U.S. Senate. He currently serves on the Committee on Appropriations, where he is the ranking minority member of the Homeland Security Subcommittee, and on the Environment and Public Works Committee, where he is ranking member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee. He is also ranking member on the Subcommittee on Oversight of Government Management, the Federal Workforce, and the District of Columbia for the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
General objectives that guide the activities and relationships of one state in its interactions with other states. The development of foreign policy is influenced by domestic considerations, the policies or behaviour of other states, or plans to advance specific geopolitical designs. Leopold von Ranke emphasized the primacy of geography and external threats in shaping foreign policy, but later writers emphasized domestic factors. Diplomacy is the tool of foreign policy, and war, alliances, and international trade may all be manifestations of it.
