Summary: Now in its sixth year, the Story Prize, an annual award for books of short fiction, is pleased to honor three outstanding short story collections published in 2009. The three finalists, all debut collections, are:

In Other Rooms, Other Wonders by Daniyal Mueenuddin (W.W. Norton)

Drift by Victoria Patterson (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)

Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned by Wells Tower (Farrar, Straus and Giroux)

These three books were selected from among 78 story collections from 53 different publishers or imprints. Mueenuddin's In Other Rooms, Other Wonders, which was also a finalist for the National Book Award, immerses readers in the colorful world of a vast estate in feudal Pakistan. Patterson's Drift presents connected stories about women and men struggling to find their place in wealthy Newport Beach, California. And eccentric characters in problematic relationships populate Tower's Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned, which was also a finalist for the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award.

The three finalists for the 2010 Story Prize read from and discuss their work with Larry Dark, the director of the award. The event culminates with the announcement of the winner and presentation of the prize: an engraved silver bowl and $20,000 in cash. Each runner-up receives $5,000.

Bio

Larry Dark

Larry Dark is the director of The Story Prize, an annual book award for short story collections. He served as series editor for the O. Henry Awards from 1997 to 2002, and before that compiled, edited, and introduced four literary anthologies.

Daniyal Mueenuddin

Daniyal Mueenuddin was brought up in Lahore, Pakistan and Elroy, Wisconsin. A graduate of Dartmouth College and Yale Law School, his stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Granta, Zoetrope, and The Best American Short Stories 2008, selected by Salman Rushdie. For a number of years he practiced law in New York. He now lives on a farm in Pakistan's southern Punjab.

Victoria Patterson

Victoria Patterson is a short fiction writer.

Wells Tower

Wells Tower is the author of the story collection "Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned," which came out last year, and which contains "Leopard," his New Yorker début story. He has received two Pushcart Prizes, The Paris Review's Plimpton (Discovery) Prize, and a Henfield Foundation award. He was included in the June 14th & 21st Summer Fiction Issue's "20 Under 40" list of notable fiction writers.
