Conservatism is about preserving the status quo, whatever that is. It's about making things go the way they used to go, no matter whether that's still possible or not. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it! If it is broken, pretend that it isn't and still don't fix it!" The simple fact of the matter was that Americans could afford to be big spenders when they were still net oil exporters. When that changed the progressives said they had to change their lifestyle. But the conservatives went for Reagan, who said they didn't. As a result the US turned from the greatest creditor nation in 1980 to the biggest debtor nation in 1990. Conservatism is simply about doing things the way you used to, or think you used to in a romanticized past. And if that was spending a lot then you spend a lot, no matter what your finances looked like then and what they look like today. Conservatism is about not changing habits from the past. So fiscal irresponsibility *can* be conservative. It can't be sustainable, but it sure can be conservative.

Always enjoy P.J.'s insights. Holidays In Hell is one of my favorite books of all time. Highly recommended.

What a guy! He does well with a microphone and his writing is even more impactful. I recommend reading his work. You'll burst out laughing. His perspective is wickedly funny, and refreshingly practical for people value freedom and are concerned about the lack of clarity in public policy.

I agree but I did enjoy his answer on whether or not Sarah Palin is the future voice of the republican party

I know that some people really like this guy but I find a lot of his humor pretty distasteful not to mention I think that his attitude on issues like gun control are pretty negative.

The header that O'Rourke "heckles conservative fiscal irresponsibility" begs a few questions. By definition "fiscal irresponsibility" can't be conservative. He can heckle "Republicans who sold out on conservative fiscal principles" but there is no such thing as "conservative fiscal irresponsibility." It's like saying "miserly generosity."
