The existence of a God for example. Never mind if he does or doesn't exist, what his role is or was, what he's made of etc...
Its like saying, however the world works, lets put God into the equation.
I personally dont see how this helps scientific development.

(Fathers remarks about Galileo are saddening considering the history, and his "clever" well God created Hell before the Big Bang for people like you asking these questions not worth the laugh. Im sure he is a very nice man and has a good hart but thats all beside the point)
I am an atheist myself but I will say that Father Coyne is from european religeon, this is different than the dumbed down American brand of religeon. Here in europe, most of the christians are old earthers and evolutionists, it's not a problem to them as they dont take the bible litterally. America has yet to interllectually mature to this point.

yintrader, you maroon. What does a bank account have to do with stars?

The filming of this event is pathetic. Most of the data is on slides and photos, and we see none of them. Someone(s) need(s) firing.

I concur with the idea we need to change, with the times.

I just came away from a bank that insists that I send in my ID again to open another accoun when I have a current account with them. In this day and age, the bank should have a database that they can check for my current address which is what the argument is about - that my old ID may not show my current address.

As I have a current account still open with them, any subsequent notification of change of address from me should be in their database. There is no need for me to send in another ID to show proof of my change of address.

If the account has been closed and I wish to re-open, there is reason for me to send in my ID again, is my stand.

Common sense would tell anyone that it is to my advantage to give banks my real address as otherwise, how will I receive my monthly bank statements to check my account has not gone astray?

This is the frustration one comes up against in daily life!

I suppose they don't necessarily have to exist independently, I just don't know how he reconciles this scientific information he obviously believes with the bible. I suppose it just shows that even logical, rational thinking by scientific people can't overcome the prejudices of childhood inducted irrational faith.

It's nice to see a man of the cloth actually using and believing in science. I guess science and religion don't necessarily have to exist independently.
