Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass discusses his work using "science to reconstruct history" in uncovering the mysteries of the pyramids, identifying mummies, and excavating the Valley of the Kings.
EG is the celebration of the American entertainment industry. Since 1984, Richard Saul Wurman has created extraordinary gatherings about learning and understanding. EG is a rich extension of these ideas - a conference that explores the attitude of understanding in music, film, television, radio, technology, advertising, gaming, interactivity and the web- The Entertainment Gathering
Bio
Zahi Hawass
Zahi Hawass currently serves as secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities and director of excavations at Giza, Saqqara and the Bahariya Oasis.
Dr. Hawass is responsible for many recent discoveries in Egypt, including the tombs of the pyramid builders at Giza. He discovered the satellite pyramid of Khufu and revealed the secrets behind the so-called doors found inside the pyramid. He also excavated at Bahariya Oasis, where he discovered the Valley of the Golden Mummies. He also found the tombs of the governor of Bahariya and his family under the houses in the town of El-Bawiti. His excavations at Saqqara revealed many discoveries around the pyramid of Teti, such as the tomb of the physician Qar, and the rediscovery of the "headless pyramid." He led an Egyptian team in the examination of the mystery of King Tut's mummy through the use of a CT scan.
Hawass is extremely concerned about the conservation and protection of Egypt's monuments. He has carried out a major conservation project on the Great Sphinx and developed management plans for a number of important sites, including the "unfinished obelisk" quarry in Aswan and the temples of Kom Ombo, Edfu and Dendera. Currently, he is completing plans for the West Bank of Luxor, Giza and Saqqara.
Dr. Hawass' dynamic personality and extensive knowledge have sparked global interest in ancient Egypt. He has brought the world of the Pharaohs into the homes and hearts of people all over the world through his numerous television appearances and books for general audiences. Over the course of his long career, Dr. Hawass has received numerous awards and honors, including TIME Magazine's "Top 100 Most Influential People" for the year 2005. Most recently, Dr. Hawass was instrumental in sending King Tutankhamun back to the United States.
Study of pharaonic Egypt from the putative beginnings of Egyptian culture (c. 4500 BC) to the Arab conquest (AD 641). Egyptology began with discovery of the Rosetta Stone (1799) and the publication of Description de l'Égypt (180928) by scholars accompanying Napoleon I. In the 19th century the Egyptian government opened Egypt to Europeans, many of whose collecting activities amounted to little more than plundering. In 1880 Flinders Petrie brought controlled, scientifically recorded excavation to Egypt, revolutionizing archaeology and pushing theories on Egyptian origins back to 4500 BC. The discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb in 1922 heightened public awareness. In 1975 the First International Congress of Egyptology convened in Cairo. Many sites remain that have been only slightly explored.
Narrow gorge, Upper Egypt, near the ancient city of Thebes. It is the burial site of nearly all of the kings (pharaohs) of the 18th20th dynasties (15391075 BC), from Thutmose I to Ramses X. The valley contains 62 tombs, virtually all of which were robbed in antiquity. Only the tomb of Tutankhamen escaped pillage; after its excavation in the 1920s, its treasures were placed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The longest tomb belongs to Queen Hatshepsut, whose burial chamber is nearly 700 ft (215 m) from the entrance. The largest tomb, built for the sons of Ramses II, contains scores of burial chambers. The valley is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site (designated 1979) centred on Thebes.
Hilarious. From the Basso Profondo voice over to this peacock who doesn't have a clue about his own history. Zahi Hawass is a back pocket amateur archaeologist.
RIGHT NOW THE EGYPTIAN SITES ARE CLOSED TO EVERYONE AFTER #= YEARS OF TORTURING THE PEOPLE AND THE AMERICANS SUPPLYING THE KILLERS WITH THE EQUIPMENT TO BEAT AND KILL THE EGYPTIAN PUBLIC; PROFITS BEFORE PEOPLE;Americans kill for a few dollars, yes SHAME ON AMERICA RUINING EGYPT AND KILLING EGYPTIANS:
I didn't know who he was before this video but I could see him acting like that. However, I found this very interesting. I haven't been following any of the new discoveries around there, but it makes me want to pay closer attention.
Mr Hawass, though very knowledgeable in his field, is also behaving like a little tyrant of egyptian archeology. He is the Mubarak of the Egyptology.
As soon as a TV camera is running near a site, he demands to be the first character in it. He sees himself as the next Indiana Jones and in so doing, distracts the attention away from more deserving scientists in Egypt. May his rule end soon.
