Summary: Pakistan's press has developed into a dynamic and influential institution. In the last year, the media have been instrumental in providing breaking real-time coverage of major events affecting the country, including the lawyers' movement, the February 2008 parliamentary elections, and the recent resignation of President Pervez Musharraf.

However, challenges do remain. Five senior-level Pakistani journalists, appearing at a September 16 Asia Program event, discussed the various obstacles currently facing the country's media - Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars

Bio

Zaffar Abbas

Zaffar Abbas is resident editor of Dawn News in Islamabad, Pakistan. Abbas was the Bureau Chief for the monthly Herald in the capital and also remained the BBC's correspondent first in Karachi and then in Islamabad for 17 years.

Mazhar Abbas

Mazhar Abbas is the Secretary General of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists. Abbas is a well-known fighter of press freedom in Pakistan who has worked as a journalist for 27 years and has endured repeated threats as a result of his work. He is also the Secretary General of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists. He also remained General Secretary of the Karachi Press Club, three times beside the President and General Secretary of the Karachi Union of Journalists, twice. During his career his life came under threats for his work.

Massoud Ansari

Massoud Ansari is a political correspondent for Herald magazine working in Pakistan.

Ejaz Haider

Ejaz Haider is News Editor of The Friday Times and Foreign Editor of Daily Times in Pakistan.

Amb Husain Haqqani

Husain Haqqani has taken over as Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States in Washington, DC. A trusted advisor of late Pakistani Prime Minister, Ms. Benazir Bhutto, Ambassador Haqqani is known as a Professor at Boston University and Co-Chair of the Hudson Institute's Project on the Future of the Muslim World as well as editor of the journal Current Trends in Islamist Thought' published from Washington DC.

Robert Hathaway

Robert Hathaway is the director of the Asia Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

Asma Shirazi

Asma Shirazi is a special correspondent and host for ARY One World Television.
