James Gustave Speth has been a leader in the environmental movement for more than 30 years and joins the Council to discuss the failures within the political system toward solving the global environmental problems in time.

Speth argues that no matter how hard environmentalists work, the current of destruction against which they are swimming is too swift and so in order to preserve a livable planet for future generations, the current itself must be altered; that is, American-style consumer capitalism - World Affairs Council of Northern California

Robert Collier is a visiting scholar at the Center for Environmental Public Policy at UC Berkeley.

James Gustave Speth

James Gustave Speth is the Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. Dean of the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies at Yale University. From 1993 to 1999, Dean Speth served as administrator of the United Nations Development Programme and chair of the UN Development Group. Prior to his service at the UN, he was founder and president of the World Resources Institute; professor of law at Georgetown University; chairman of the U.S. Council on Environmental Quality; and senior attorney and cofounder, Natural Resources Defense Council.
