The New Republic's 2008 Guide to the Candidates: A Celebration.
In early 2005, Editor Frank Foer made a commitment to covering the 2008 presidential candidates with a fresh lens. This "fresh" angle included profiles of major contenders from both political parties. The effort was met with a hugely positive response. Of the Barack Obama profile, George Stephanopolous said, "The New Republic has the best and most comprehensive take on Obama that I have seen." The profiles have now been compiled into a book - TNR's 2008 Guide to the Candidates - along with news, analysis, and insight into the individuals running in the broadest presidential field in decades- Sixth & I Historic Synagogue

Jonathan Chait
Jonathan Chait (b. 1972) is a senior editor at The New Republic and a former assistant editor of The American Prospect. He also writes a periodic column in the Los Angeles Times. A graduate of the University of Michigan, he wrote for The Michigan Daily while in college. He began working at The New Republic in 1995. His writing has also appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Slate and Reason.
Michelle Cottle
Michelle Cottle has been a senior editor at The New Republic since February 1999. She is a 1992 magna cum laude graduate of Vanderbilt University with a B.A. in English and a minor in European Studies.
Prior to joining The New Republic, Cottle was an editor of The Washington Monthly for two years. She has also worked for the Tom Peters Group, editing its monthly newsletter; served as an editorial fellow at Mother Jones magazine, and has done freelance writing, editing, and commentary for CNN, The New York Times, Time, Slate, The Atlantic and George magazine, among others. Cottle is a regular panelist for the PBS political affairs show, "Tucker Carlson Unfiltered."
Michael Crowley
Michael Crowley is senior editor at The New Republic. He joined TNR in 2000 after working for The Boston Globe and The Boston Phoenix. His writing has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, GQ, Slate, and other publications.
He is also a contributing editor for Readers Digest and a frequent political commentator on MSNBC. He is a 1994 graduate of Yale University and lives in Washington, D.C.
Franklin Foer
Franklin Foer is an American political journalist and the editor of The New Republic.
Foer graduated from Columbia in 1996. Before joining The New Republic, Foer was a frequent contributor to the online magazine Slate.
His writing has also appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Spin, U.S. News & World Report, Lingua Franca, The Atlantic Monthly, The Wall Street Journal, New York and Foreign Policy. In 2004 he published his first book, How Soccer Explains the World: An Unlikely Theory of Globalization.
Noam Scheiber
Noam Scheiber has been with The New Republic since August, 2000. He holds a master's degree in economics from Oxford University and a B.S. in math from Tulane University. In addition to his work at TNR, Scheiber has written for The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, Slate, Salon, The Washington Monthly, the Chicago Tribune, and The Christian Science Monitor. He has appeared on CNN, CNNfn, CNBC and NPR.
Leon Wieseltier
Leon Wieseltier is literary editor of The New Republic, a post he's held since 1983. He is the author of Kaddish, among other books. His essays on political, literary, and religious subjects have appeared in many publications. He was educated at Columbia College, Balliol College, Oxford, and Harvard University, where he was a member of the Society of Fellows. His small acting career has included a part on "The Sopranos."
