In the past religion could answer all the questions necessary for life of an ordinary man from its start to the end and science will never explain the world totally but only undermine religious beliefes creating depressions, anxiety and addictions because the more you know the less you understand.

I have no fancy degrees or special knowledge, I just know that Sam's speech gave a voice to what I have known in my heart my entire life! Even as a child I lumped God in with Santa and the Tooth Fairy. I never believed in anything religious and I always felt out of place around religious people. Common sense, logic and now Sam have helped me to understand what I feel. My main complaint with people in general is pretending to "know" things they cannot possibly know. They refer to things as "the truth" when it is really only a belief. Belief in god can never be the truth. It is a strongly held opinion and with opinion, mine or the Christians, there is no right or wrong.

Let me save you some time, after wasting mine:

1) if you are an atheist, much of this is nothing new to you. Maybe you'll find some more shallow arguments, or maybe some more jokes and sideswipes to impress your (atheist) friends. And that's fine, but it's unlikely to elevate your understanding of the topic.

2) if you are a religious person, you'll be likely offended. That despite the fact the speaker throws disclaimers to the contrary before the talk.

It's like someone trying to explain why your alcoholic father is a bad person by making dirty jokes about him. If you love your father you'll be likely offended, although you know alcoholism is bad (remember, one can be good without being perfect). If on the other hand you are an inveterate enemy of alcoholism, then it's also likely you don't need Mr. Harris' advice or snide comments.

What Mr. Harris should ask himself is whether his talk is an argument designed to convince religious people that their belief is misguided, or whether he is just trying to be a (much much less funnier) George Carlin. If the former hypothesis is true, then I could tell you this: try someone else. If the latter one is true, then, as I said - find George Carlin on youtube and look at that; I promise you that you'll be better entertained.

I believe that if you truly want to seek the answer as to where your beliefs are, please study the matter for yourself; pursue some depth please. Look at Einstein's thoughts about God and religion; seek some first class Christian literature. The options are there. But please, don't settle for middlemen, especially the cheap variety like the one discussed here. Have some faith (no pun intended) in yourself.

@fswoboda - You have obviously not read what Sam Harris wrote if you are making such a claim. He quite clearly states that rape is an evolutionary tool for some males to pass on their genes to the next generation. He then goes on to say that despite this 'natural' inclination nobody would claim that rape is a morally good behaviour.

Sam Harris has the idea that is was good for women to be raped. He is quoted as saying this many times. Please remove him from this web page. He is an insult to civilized men and women everywhere. Anyone who advocates for rape should not be listen to for any reason.

At 44 minutes he says Islam invented algebra.
I suggest otherwise: they got it from other civilisations that they destroyed and called it their own, and having destroyed all history books of their captives, there were no real records. That is the way of their so-called religion. More like an excuse to take what you want and call it your own.

I think he probably does, to be fair. This is his day job.

It is true that the talmud and commentators etc form the basis for Jewish Philosophy which is very deep and Sam Harris is extremely superficial (and uses many straw man fallacies eg sep11). The problem is that the historicity of the bible does form the foundation of the religion and that historicity is vey problematic when it comes to evidence from science/archeology/external sources. This will directly effect the legitimacy of the deeper philosophy and esoteric side of judaism (or any biblical based religion)
Eg the stories of Noach seem to fit bronze age mythologies from Babylonians/Akkadians etc rather than any historical Divine actions and therefore the moral lessons are diluted if the historicity is extremely weak. Isnt this the case ? Are the people such as Noach just "metaphorical people" - where does one draw the line ? Either it is a deceiving deity or stories created by various people or many systems dont have a certain true book but all tap in to various degrees to an ultimate truth (which may be unknowable).
