I find it rather odd that Christopher Hitchens opens his lecture by stating that he took the oath to become an American citizen at the memorial for Thomas Jefferson. I assume, that is the same Jefferson who stated and, who all of the rest of the signers of the Declaration by their signature agreed with, that only a total idiot would conclude there is no God. At least, that is what I have been led to believe "self-evident" means.

As to the violence supposedly caused by belief in God, it would seem that the religion of science, education and intellectualism has created a little violence of it's own, what with nuclear, bio and worse weaponry produced by 'educated' scientists, American, French and Russian revolutions, war machines designed by Leonardo DaVinci and Pharoah's scientists designing war chariots and what not and so forth. Why not put the blame for human violence where it belongs, on human beings and our historically unbridled frustration, greed and avarice and otherwise, stop pretending violence is caused by belief in God?

How is this man one of the most profound intellectuals of our time, that he doesn't seem to have a clue what Thomas Jefferson believed or actually stood for, what the 1st Amendment actually says, or where violence and war actually originate from? It must be easy being a top intellectual nowadays. One might conclude even an average biker, exotic pole dancer or truck driver would have an equal chance, who may not have strings of degrees attached to their names and books about why there is not God ascribed to their pen, but who overwhelmingly believe in the overwhelmingly obvious "self-evidence" of sin.

Who is this historical neophyte, who doesn't seem to have a clue about the evil that men and women do or why we do it and, why would anyone buy any of his books? May as well read Goldielocks and Three Bears or some other worthwhile fairytale, that at least contains a semblance of human reason and moral rhyme.

I agree. Though it seems to be a natural reaction when you are outnumbered like that, they could have been a little more gracious.

I know the questions were a little bizarre, but I wish the audience wasn't so rude and obnoxious.

Jack Daniels and Karl Marx
I feel sorry for Hitchens at this appearance. I can almost sense that he would love some of that Jack Daniels as he fields audience questions and comments. Great to see he's kept his cool through the whole thing and tried to keep the peace when he sensed the audience members were growing tired of each other. Good job and great responses - though I would have loved for him to get his trousers off about Karl Marx so-to-speak.

Wow... anyone else think that the crowd was being dumb toward the Christian guy. It's embarrassing.

Mr. Hitchens is really on his game here. His wit is very sharp. It is too bad the questions were not screened. Many of these people were hard to watch.

Hitchens' knowledge of Christianity, of which he is oh-so-critical is almost laughably deficient. As if he could characterize all Christianity on the basis of a statement made by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Shameful.

Hitchens is brilliant, he always is very satirical and has an aura of intelligence around him it seems. I wish they would have had a bit better form with the questions but overall it was a good meeting
