I think they bring up a very good point that is not generally in the thoughts of most Americans or even of most of the people of the world who are more concerned about their daily lives without giving much thought that their daily commerce of living is very much connected with satellites that relay our monetary transactions, our TV communications, phone transmissions, airborne traffic tracking not to mention the military for various defense and offense capabilities.
The question was brought up that if a satellite was disabled would it mean a act of war. Of course, one would have to consider the circumstances such as, can one be certain that it was a hostel act and not a natural event, such as being struck by a meteorite. Of course even this in a hostel environment could be used as a prelude to initiate a conflict.. Would the military of any country have reason to believe that another country would have reason to purposely disable their satellite, such as would a threatening country use these to hinder their abilities or give their adversaries a advantage in a conflict, which is not only possible but probably should there be a conflict.
If a natural disabling is determined then it has to be determined if it was a act of a country or a terrorist act of a organized terrorist cell or even a commercial adversary. Should it be determined to be a act of terrorism then what?
As we become more and more dependent of satellite technology I believe that should such a event occur, it could and would be determined to be a act of war, or subject to countermeasures.
As all technology since the working of flint is neither good or bad but determined by the intentions of those that use it, we all have a stake in it's development and use, let's use it wisely and for the good of all man kind.
