On February 23, 2007, Matthew Levitt and Todd Hinnen addressed The Washington Institute's Special Policy Forum. Dr. Levitt recently rejoined the Institute as a senior fellow and director of the Michael Stein Program on Terrorism, Intelligence, and Policy. From November 2005 to January 2007, he served as deputy assistant secretary for intelligence and analysis at the Treasury Department. Mr. Hinnen, a former director in the National Security Council's Counterterrorism Directorate, is currently counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Bio
Matthew Levitt
Dr. Matthew Levitt is a senior fellow and director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy’s Stein Program on Terrorism, Intelligence, and Policy. From 2005-2007, he served as deputy assistant secretary for intelligence and analysis at the U.S. Department of the Treasury where he played a central role in efforts to protect the U.S. financial system from abuse and to deny terrorists, weapons proliferators, and other actors the ability to finance threats to U.S. National security. From 2001-2005, Dr. Levitt served the Washington Institute as founding director of its Terrorism Research Program. He previously provided tactical and strategic analytical support for the FBI counterterrorism operations which focused on tackling fund raising and logistical support networks for Middle Eastern terrorist groups.
Dr. Levitt has written extensively on terrorism, the Middle East, and Arab-Israeli peace negotiations, with articles appearing in major world newspapers. His latest books include Hamas: Politics, Charity, and Terrorism in the Service of Jihad and Negotiating Under Fire: Preserving Peace Talks in the Face of Terror Attacks.
