Dr. John Chipman - Dr. John Chipman is the Director-General and Chief Executive at The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London, England.
Patrick M. Cronin - The Honorable Patrick M. Cronin has extensive experience in research and analysis, academe and government across defense, intelligence, foreign policy and economic affairs. From 2003-2005, Dr Cronin was Senior Vice President and Director of Studies of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, where he remains a Senior Advisor.
Dr. Mamoum Fandy - Dr. Mamoum Fandy previously served as Senior Fellow of Arab and Middle East Politics at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University in the US, and as Editor of the bi-monthly Qadaya Alamiyya (Global Issues).
Prior to that he was a Senior Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington DC, Professor of Middle East Politics at the Near East–South Asia Center for Strategic Studies (NESA) at the National Defense University, and Professor of Arab Politics at Georgetown University.
His publications have included Saudi Arabia and the Politics of Dissent; Kuwait as a New Concept of International Politics; and (Un) Civil war of Words: The Politics of Arab Media (forthcoming). Dr Fandy’s popular articles have appeared the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and more regularly in the Christian Science Monitor. He is a columnist for the Pan-Arab daily Asharq Al-Awsat. He appears on various TV channels such as CNN, FoxNews, BBC and PBS , al-Arabiya and many other Arabic TV channels.
Mark Fitzpatrick - Fitzpatrick comes to IISS from a distinguished 26-year career in the US Department of State, where for the last ten years he focused on non-proliferation issues. In his last posting, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Non-proliferation, responsible for policies to address the proliferation problems posed by Iran, North Korea, Libya, Iraq, South Asia and other regions of concern.
Among his duties, he also oversaw implementation of the Proliferation Security Initiative, advanced conventional arms and technology controls, proliferation sanctions, and export control cooperation programs.
Col. Christopher Langton - Colonel Christopher Langton joined the staff of the Institute in June 2001 after 32 years service in the British Army. He has experience from Northern Ireland and from service as a Military and Defence Attache in Russia and the CIS, including the countries of the South Caucasus and Central Asia. He was Deputy Chief of UNOMIG. Colonel Langton is a Russian linguist. Before being appointed as Senior Fellow for Conflict and Defence Diplomacy he was Head of the Defence Analysis Department, Editor of The Military Balance and Research Fellow for Russia and Eurasia.
Alex Nicoll - Alexander Nicoll is Director of Editorial at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. He is Editor of the annual IISS publication Strategic Survey, and of the monthly publication Strategic Comments. He is leading the IISS European Capabilities Project, which is seeking new ways to define and analyse military capabilities in the light of modern missions.
Mr Nicoll came to the IISS from the Financial Times newspaper, where he was Defence Correspondent from 1997 to 2002. Previously, he had been the FT's Asia Editor and also spent three years on secondment to New Delhi as Consulting Editor of Business Standard, India's second largest business newspaper.
Among other positions at the FT, he was UK News Editor and International Edition Editor. During his earlier career with Reuters news agency, Mr Nicoll was a correspondent in Hong Kong, London, Paris, Tehran and New York. He is a graduate of St John’s College, Oxford.
Rahul Roy-Chaudhury - Rahul Roy-Chaudhury is the Research Fellow for South Asia at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, where he manages its South Asia programme.
Earlier, he served in the National Security Council Secretariat in the Prime Minister's Office in India.
Prior to his official appointment, he was on the faculty of the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses in New Delhi. He has also been a Senior Research Fellow at the International Policy Institute at King's College, London.
On Wednesday 31 January 2007, the International Institute for Strategic Studies launched The Military Balance 2007, the annual assessment of the military capabilities and defense economics of 170 countries world-wide. A detailed press statement was be made by Dr John Chipman, Director-General of the IISS. Dr Chipman, along with Col Christopher Langton, Editor of The Military Balance, and other senior IISS staff members then answered questions for 35 - 40 minutes.
