Illustration Today: A Symposium on the State of the Art
Through images, illustration shows us who we are by rendering how we perceive, interact with, and think about the world. But the medium is at a crossroads: the traditional forms of editorial illustration are losing their dominance, new vistas are rapidly opening up, and older avenues are being reinvented.
Over two-dozen leading practitioners will talk about and engage in spirited discussions on a range of topics. Steven Guarnaccia, Parsons Illustration Department Chair and former New York Times art director and Dan Nadel, Parsons Illustration Department Assistant Professor and publisher of The Ganzfeld, will moderate the symposium- The New School
Bio
George Hardy
Following his design education at the Royal College of Art, George Hardie formed NTA studios with designers Bush Hollyhead and Malcolm Harrison. During the 1970s he often collaborated with the design group Hipgnosis as both designer and illustrator on album sleeves, the most famous of which were for albums by Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.
In the past few decades Hardie has produced an impressive body of work that is always highly individual and for which he has received a great number of awards, including seven D&AD silver awards, the Pantone European Award and the Swiss Art Directors Club silver award. His work has been exhibited widely and featured in a recent show at the Pentagram Gallery.
Since 1980, Hardie has also lectured and taught at the University of Brighton, where he is now a professor teaching the MA course in sequential design and illustration, which focuses on visual narratives and story-telling. A member (and former UK president) of the distinguished graphic design body, Alliance Graphic International, Hardie continues to work on many international commissions including postage stamps for the Royal Mail and on his own experimental publications.
