One of the facile and prominent misconceptions about Reagans personal beliefs is that because he advocated a robust defense policy and heavy defense spending he was some sort of war mongerer. His personal writings (going back to the 60s) make it very clear that this isn't the case. As these panelists make clear Reagan was highly motivated to eliminate nuclear weapons.

Is that "proven"? Show us the evidence please. As for your second point, no one on this panel calls Reagan a peacenik--but his determination to end nuclear weapons as the primary leverage point for diplomacy in a bi-polar or multi-polar world is proven beyond question. And yes, they would have tried to put that point across because it's easily demonstrated with reference to the written record.

ok, it has been PROVEN that star wars missile defense was NOT a solely defensive mechanism but rather a tool ENABLING nuclear aggression. for these guys to say otherwise is deceptive and wrong. also reagan may have been a lot of things but he was certainly not the no-nukes peacenik this panel is making him out to be. they wouldn't even have tried to put something like that across if there had been an outspoken liberal on this panel.

Also, I thought it was funny that Roz seemed to be annoyed with Peter during most of the summit.

The very end of the summit, where they started talking about nuclear disarmament, was the most interesting part I thought. I suppose I never considered before the implications of the US just laying down all its nuclear weapons when so many other countries still have them. A dumb idea. But it's for the benefit of the human race for all countries to disarm. However, I don't think it will ever happen because how can you trust countries who are your enemies in a "if you walk away I'll walk away" situation? You can't.

It makes me nervous to think that the US and Russia are the two countries with the most amount of nuclear warheads...in the thousands, as opposed to all the other countries who have them in the hundreds. Russia seems so de-stabilized and weak, what if a country who hates the West steals a bomb from them? Mabe this isn't a practical concern...it probably isn't like they can put a nuclear bomb under their jacket and walk out of Russia with it, whistling. But still. I don't know. Why does Russia need so many when it doesn't seem to be a major world player anymore?
