Antinuclear activist Helen Caldicott contends that nuclear power is not the solution to global warming. The author examines the costs, toxic effects, and terrorism risks of nuclear energy, and suggests alternatives for renewable energy. This event was hosted by Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
Helen Caldicott is the founder and president of the Nuclear Policy Research Institute. For more than thirty-five years, Dr. Caldicott has lobbied on the hazards of nuclear weapons and nuclear war. The organization she co-founded in 1978, Physicians for Social Responsibility, was co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. A documentary based on a lecture she gave in 1981, on the topic of nuclear war, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary (short) in 1982.

Watched an hour. Wasn't too impressed. Bit of a haphazard argument I thought, she references Chernobyl obviously, but doesn't counter this with people dying in coal mines for example(a comparable effect). She failed to address the evolution of nuclear energy, that is to say, the advancement and possibility of attaining nuclear fusion in the near future. She talked about geothermal, but I am under the impression that it is in fact a type of nuclear energy since it deals with nuclear reactions rather than chemical reactions. There are also graduated(primary, secondary and tertiary) safety measures in nuclear plants, which are automated; the lessening of human activity leads to the lessening of the threat of human error. Oh she also misquoted the Bible, it does not say, "Thou Shall Not Kill" - that's a mistranslation. It says, "Thou Shalt Not Do Murder" - which in the context means that you should not kill your 'fellow Jew' intentionally.
