@rocketdog: It could be argued that the Union of Concerned Scientists serves this purpose. See especially The A to Z Guide to Political Interference in Science.

Of course, UCS is easy for conservative pundits to pigeonhole as liberal elitist etc. Without the space race or something similar to convince Americans of the everyday importance and urgency of good science, we have a big challenge trying to get people to listen to us "eggheads".

I also recommend this talk by Seth Shulman, author of Undermining Science: Suppression and Distortion in the Bush Administration. I find him more insightful.

Mooney's most important point -- out of many, many good ones -- is that scientists themselves must share some of the blame for allowing evangelical activists to hijack their issues. The scientific communiity absolutely has got to set up some kind of large-scale PR machine of their own if this stuff is ever going to be dealt with effectively. So get off your butts, eggheads.

Well, it's no secret extremist religious people are all about converting those who aren't a part of their religion. Considering the strong hold of the evangelicals on America's government at the moment, it's disgusting the ideas they're trying to force on our society. I also think that, if they wanna force people to learn intelligent design along with evolution, they should force people to learn what every culture and religion believes in the creation of our species.

The institutional agencies that are supporting and advancing these bogus "scientific" theories are mindboggling. It is hard to believe that these agencies get funding and are established posing as members of the scientific community. Mooney addresses they are the product of special interest groups, politically funded, and have a strong PR infrastructure, but have very little to do with science. As Mooney addresses these right wing sponsored scientific goups' aim is not to create influence in the scientific community, but to cause doubt, confusion, and to play on the uneducated in order to maintain complete power and control.
