While I appreciated many of Amb. Sherman’s points, I disagree with her assessment that we need to stand behind Pres. Bush and support him, no matter what our political leanings, due to the seriousness of the global challenges we face today. The truth is that there have been many periods in world history which were just as frightening. Convincing Americans that the world is an increasingly dangerous place and that we need his protection has been a great way for Pres. Bush to hold on to power.

Just to perpetuate this little conversation with myself, Sherman's insightful, realist approach to international diplomacy makes it apparent she's a colleague of Madeline Albright's. Makes me nostalgic for a time when US foreign policy couldn't be boiled down to schizophrenic cowboy BS...

I would like to hear a truly long-term diplomatic strategy for dealing with North Korea. I understand the need for a careful approach to negotiation, but where is all this headed? Do sanctions really help oppose the government of North Korea, or do they just harm its starving, miserable people? And what good is any food aid if it's just a drop in the bucket of the millions of Koreans who don't have anything to eat?

"Nuclear North Korea." You know, no matter what the context, that's always a phrase that can get a double-take out of me.
