@ ~ 36:50 Bowden makes the statement that the Iranian Revolution was "not connected with any of the larger currents in the world"? Boy, he sure isn't an expert on this topic. The Iranian Revolution was a direct reaction against the two decades-plus brutal rule of the Shah who was installed following the 1953 CIA-backed coup d'etat overthrowing the democratically-elected Dr. Mohammad Mossadeq. Why was Mossadeq overthrown? Because he had the gall to nationalize Iran's oil fields. (Poor Texaco! Poor Shell!) Capitalism vs. communism? Part of the Cold War? You bet. The people of Iran know full well who was behind Mossadeq's overthrow. The hostage situation was "an aberration"? Such a statement makes it seem as though the event had absolutely no history behind it; that it happened for no reason at all; no motive; that the hostage takers were acting arbitrarily. Nothing could be further from the truth.

If you want the skinny on this overthrow (and loads more about post-WW2 CIA activity and U.S. foreign policy), read William Blum's 'Killing Hope'.

Bowden is a great writer with a knack for turning excellently researched journalism into great stories. However, I think he gives the Iranian terrorists too easy of a pass here. These men should be universally condemned, not given an outlet to further their fanatical message.

Bowden is a natural storyteller. His efforts in research and interviews with Iranian hostage takers is fascinating.

Wow, my thoughts watching this clip were like, "Ok, great, a book about the Iran hostage crisis, blah blah blah"...until he mentioned actually going to Iran to meet with the hostage takers to get their perspective on the incident. That's ballsy reporting, right there.

Bowden seems to be a well-researched guy and it sounds like he's written an interesting book. All of which will pay off quite handsomely once Hollywood options it for a bazillion and a half dollars.
