Honestly, I could not tell if MacFarquhar's attempt was a satirical look at American media, or a retelling of The Ugly American, the old Marlon Brando film. His protagonists do little beyond fantasize about undressing Arab women and exercise their inflated egos. The delivery makes it difficult to understand the tone. Are we supposed to identify with these characters or despise them?
